Since first opening Mozzeria back in 2011, owners Melody and Russell Stein, have received a great deal of praise and attention for their Mission District pizzeria.
The first restaurant operated by a deaf couple in a major city and staffed entirely by deaf employees — as well as being the first deaf-owned restaurant to get certification from the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (AVPN) — it’s the Stein’s delicious pizzas that ultimately keep their fans coming back. The business has proved popular enough that the pair expanded by launching a mobile pizza trolley this past fall.
In the following new short film from Small Business Revolution — a nationwide campaign that enlisted award-winning documentarians to celebrate the country’s most compelling small businesses — the Steins and their pizzeria are in the spotlight once again.
Directed by Matt Naylor, the film is a lovely tribute to how the neighborhood pizzeria has become a touchstone for not only San Francisco’s deaf community, but also for its hearing customers, which make up roughly 90% of business.
